There are 29 diving centres attached to hotels and another 7 hotels are serviced by adjoining operators. These dive operations are distributed all around the island. Another 10 or so diving businesses operate independently of the hotels. The exact number of divers visiting Mauritius is not known but one of the largest diving businesses estimates that it handles 10,000 divers ranging from experienced to beginner, per year and the total for the country will be at least 50,000 but might even double. This means that divers comprise at least 10 % of tourists. In line with world-wide trends, demand for diving in Mauritius is said to have expanded greatly in the past few years.
