Situated some 550 kilometres to the north-east of the island of Mauritius, Rodrigues is an island of volcanic origin. With an area of 110 square kilometres, it is known as the tenth district of the Republic of Mauritius. It has a sheltered lagoon of about 200 square kilometres and is surrounded by a number of islets. The capital of Rodrigues Port Mathurin, is situated in the North of the island and the airport is at Plaine Corail.

Rodrigues have become less dependent on agriculture due to the climatic conditions. Fishing and animal rearing are the main economic activities. Much economic importance is being given to local crafts due to recent boom in tourism activity in Rodrigues. A wide selection of handicraft goods are now sold to tourists as souvenirs.
Rodrigues has a population of approximately 34,000 inhabitants originating from Africa, Europe and Asia. The mother tongue is Creole although English and French are commonly used for administrative purposes.
With its own specific charm and touch, Rodrigues has vast to offer to the potential visitor; The Rodriguans, from diverse origins and cultures live a simple life in harmony and they are enthusiastic about preserving� both their social and physical environment. Rodrigues is home to several species of endemic tropical flora and fauna. It is an unspoilt environment for the nature lover seeking peace and calmness. If you prefer hiking round the island, it is a breathtaking experience. Other popular attractions include visits to caves where the incredible works of nature, stalactites and stalagmites, take the shapes of the dragon, the lion and even the Buddha. The island is well appreciated for its cleanliness
The population in Rodrigues is similar to that in Mauritius. Language spoken is Creole, though English is the official language and French is still widely used. |
